The story
Gunakali Ragini, from the Ragamala — the garland of melodies in which each mode of music is painted as a mood. The nayika sits on a takht on a terrace outside a pavilion drawn after the honey-coloured stone of Jaisalmer, a lotus in her hand. One handmaiden offers her paan, another waves a morchal, a third keeps time on a dafli. Flat layers of cool colour carry the hills into the distance, so that all the brightness gathers in the reds of the lehenga-cholis and the ease of the scene. Painted in my own hand while keeping the essence of the Indian miniature.
